GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE Pride Guide 2005

State Representative Michael J. Skindell representing Cleveland's

west side and Lakewood

Ten reasons you should come to Pride this year

by Kimberly Hill

Cleveland-This year's Cleveland Pride celebration, "The Greatest Pride on Earth," will be held Saturday, June 18 and will kick off with a new parade route. Line-up starts 11:30 a.m. at West 3rd and St. Clair, with step-off at 1 p.m. The parade will culminate with a rally at 2 p.m. at Voinovich Park, followed by the fabulous Pride Festival from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

But why should you be there? Here are ten

reasons:

10. Wise Fool New Mexico has developed three thrill-packed aerial acts just for Cleveland Pride and you'll miss them if you don't show.

9. Kimberly Locke rocks, and she'll be ever so much more fun in person than on American Idol.

8. You'll see acts of great courage: P-FLAGers marching with their just-out kids, teenage children raised in same-sex families marching with their dates, queers of all stripes seeing their ex-partners for the first time in a year.

7. Voinovich Park is a great place for a festival with plenty of green space and lake breezes the tiger's pajamas.

6. You can wear your pajamas, or your best leather, or your femmest stiletto pumps, or your tightest T-shirt, or ...

5. You're dating the hottest hottie ever, and you can't wait to show off in the center ring. 4. You're not dating anyone, and this is the biggest gathering of queers all summer long.

3. Your kids love parades, and you can spread out on the lawn with a picnic for the afternoon.

2. You're a kid at heart, and you love parades, jugglers, clowns, and all those giveaways at the vendor tents.

1. And, the Number One reason you should come to Pride this year: The homophobes behind Issue 1 think they've won and that we'll be quiet as they dismantle our civil rights. Hear us roar!

The band wants you, and so do the Flag Queens

by Brandyn J. Metzko

Cleveland-The Cleveland Lesbian/ Gay/Allies Concert/Marching Band wants you! The band is looking for people who play an instrument or who have ever played an instrument to join them for their 2005 Marching Band Tour.

Play in the Cleveland Pride parade, or join the band for Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus, or Rochester Pride. Members play as few or as many gigs as their schedule and interest allows. The band also tours other cities and plays other parades with other bands from the Lesbian Gay Band Association.

Don't have an instrument? Fear not! There are a limited number of instruments available for use, as well as leads on affordable rentals and purchases. Haven't played in years? Not to worry! Members range from amateurs to professionals. Some of the current principal players hadn't played in 10 or 20 years when they joined. The band will work with you to get you up to speed. Many members teach privately, and often folks enjoy learning a new instrument with us.

Marching isn't your thing? There is also a concert band that plays material from the standard wind ensemble repertoire, orchestral transcriptions, pop hits, and more. The ensemble is now open to string players,

too, in addition to winds, brass, and percussionists.

The concert band rehearses weekly on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm in the band room (Room G-15) of the Music and Communications Building at Cleveland State University, except during the month of June.

If you would like to try the band out, contact Brandyn Metzko at 216-631-6126 or b.metzko@gaybandcleveland.org. Read more about the band at www.gayband cleveland.org.

Ever had that secret desire of grabbing a flagpole and waving it around like you just don't care? Did you envy those colorguards from high school? Well, look no further!

The Cleveland Lesbian/Gay/Allies Concert/Marching Band is proud to announce the conception of its newest group, the Flag Queens! Membership is open to anyone who would like to have a great time and show what they've got to Cleveland and other cities throughout the midwest. Contact Flag Queens director George Oberdorf-Metzko at 216-798-8521 or george@gaybandcleveland.org for more

info.

Brandyn J. Metzko is president and artistic director of the Cleveland Lesbian/Gay/ Allies Concert/Marching Band. He has been working with the band from their founding in September 2003.
